Visit the Steamboat Springs Chamber to learn of the fun family activities going on in our community. There are lots of opportunity for the family to join you in Steamboat. While you are learning the secrets to backcountry flying, your family can be participating in these fun activities.

Steamboat Springs is located in northwestern, Colorado approximately 110 nm (as the crow flies) from Denver. If you are flying from the Denver area, most GA pilots fly routes to KSBS over Rollins Pass or Cameron Pass(both are identified on the Denver and Cheyenne sectional charts). Both passes are over 11,000 MSL. Typical crossing altitudes over these passes is recommended at 2000′ or higher above the pass altitude. The mountains on either side of these passes are 12,000-14,000′ MSL.  KSBS is located on the Cheyenne sectional chart.  If winds aloft are strong, many pilots choose a northerly route to KSBS from the Colorado/Wyoming Border. We recommend you arrive in KSBS at least one day prior to the training.  If wind and weather suggest arriving 2-3 days before the training, it is better than pushing through adverse conditions. The worse that can happen is you spend more time enjoying Steamboat Springs.  You might even be lucky enough to get the “Yampa Valley Curse”.  If you get the curse, we know some realtors you will want to talk to while you are here.

If you are not flying your airplane to KSBS, you can fly in to Denver International Airport (DIA) and rent a car for the approximately 3 hour drive via I-70, Colorado highway 9 and then US 40 to Steamboat Springs, or take a shuttle flight from DIA to Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN). Rental cars and shuttles are available on the airport for the 25 miles drive to Steamboat Springs.

Lodging- There is every price category of motels, hotels, B&B, or condos available in Steamboat Springs.  If you don’t rent a car, it is recommended you stay at a place that has shuttle service to get you to and from the airport.  KSBS is located 2 miles from downtown Steamboat Springs.  Contact the Steamboat Springs Chamber for booking your stay.
